God's Daughter, Book One: Vikings of the New World Saga by Heather Day Gilbert

Historical Fiction

One Viking woman. One God. One legendary journey to North America.

In the tenth century, when pagan holy women rule the Viking lands, Gudrid turns her back on her training as a seeress to embrace Christianity. Clinging to her faith, she joins her husband, Finn, on a voyage to North America.

But even as Gudrid faces down murderous crewmen, raging sickness, and hostile natives, she realizes her greatest enemy is herself--and the secrets she hides might just tear her marriage apart.

Almost five centuries before Columbus, Viking women sailed to North America with their husbands. GOD'S DAUGHTER, Book One in the Vikings of the New World Saga, offers an expansive yet intimate look into the world of Gudrid Thorbjarnardottir--daughter-in-law of Erik the Red, and the first documented European woman to have a child in North America.

Excerpt:

Hellisvellir, Iceland

The gods only accept what is valuable.
Gudrid repeated this to herself as they hoisted her mother into the tree. Her beautiful mother with the long shining hair, like her own.
Her cousin, Yngvild, touched her hand. Not a word was spoken, from anyone. No one could believe a young mother would die for the required nine-year sacrifice, along with the expected slaves and animals. But the chieftain had ordered it. And the chieftain was her father.
Gudrid's aunt hunched over, sobbing into her sleeves. Uncle Thorgeir did not even look at the tree. He seemed happy to gain more control of her mother’s family farm.
Gudrid clenched her fists on her shift, bunching it so tightly she felt she could rip it apart. She longed to fight the men who would drop the ladder, breaking her mother’s neck. But interrupting a sacrifice to Thor was punishable by death—the immediate death of hanging.
The sprawling, twisted tree loomed like a giant against the gray Icelandic sky, its limbs clutching at the dangling dead animals and people. Gudrid imagined the tree held them back from dropping straight into Helheim. Truly, Mother should go straight to Valhalla for being a willing sacrifice. But only the men who died bravely in battle got to go there, to drink endless mead for eternity.
Her father blew the ram’s horn, and a slave kicked the ladder out. For one second, Father’s eyes glazed over, as if he was far away. Even though he was devoted to Mother, he believed the only way to restore the bounty of the farm, failing since he had charge of it, was to give up the one thing he really cared about.
Mother’s face went slack and lost color. Gudrid was strangely thankful that she did not turn blue, with her eyes bulging, as some of the slaves had. It meant she died quickly, as a perfect sacrifice should.
Gudrid looked around, aware she needed a protector. Even at eleven years old, she understood this. Father had never wanted a girl. Her aunt was too grief-stricken—she would barely be able to care for her own children now, after watching her sister die.
Orm’s sad gaze met her own. He was a neighbor from a nearby farm, on a cliff overlooking the shoreline. His wife, Halldis, was a volva, a seeress who knew magic. Gudrid refused to look at her. She did not want to see the eyes of the woman who had told Father he needed such a significant sacrifice this year.
The last body was hanged, and another volva led a chant with the drum. Since many slaves had been killed, their families began to sing quietly in their own languages. As the words clashed, each group sang louder and louder. It was the only time they sang publicly.
Gudrid felt her insides burning, down to the core, like the volcanoes on this island. Anger and loneliness forced her from her seat. She hated Thor and anything to do with him. She groped for her knife before raising it to her throat. Then she charged straight for her father.

Why did Heather write this novel?

I wrote God's Daughter primarily because of my interest in my heritage. I am (allegedly) related to Eirik the Red, and I bought a book of the Icelandic Sagas to study up on his family. As I read about it, I was fascinated by a Christian Viking woman named Gudrid, who sailed with her third husband to North America. I wanted to tell her story'

Tell us something topical, interesting, funny, or something we would not expect about the writing or research of this novel.

As I researched this book, it became clear to me how powerful women were in Viking culture. The pagan priestesses wielded power, and yet their practices were more harmful than helpful (child exposure, etc). I was surprised how Christianity actually changed the practices of this entire people group for the better, and I wanted to highlight that.

GOODBYE NOEL by Nike Chillemi

Christmas Murder Mystery/Romantic Suspense

The first body is found under a trimmed Christmas tree, the second as they ring in the New Year (1947), the third goes head long out a window. Will a young pediatric nurse determined to make it on her own be able to care for an infant whose mother was murdered and escape the killer who has struck again? Can she trust the stalwart village detective with her life and her heart as he works to catch this killer before somebody else dies?

Pediatric nurse, Katrina Lenart, grew up strong willed and independent minded, while sharing her mother's flair for high fashion. When the police chief gives her an orphaned baby to care for, her maternal instincts take over and she's willing to fight anyone who might not have the infant's best interests at heart, even the man she's growing to love. After an attempt is made to kidnap the baby, she and the resolute village detective team up and do some sleuthing, undercover at a cult as well as at a fancy ball.

Detective Ian Daltry is a widower with a child and is not interested in a new love. Hunting a killer who stops at nothing has placed him in the position where he must protect a beautiful young woman he's drawn to. Is there's something he's overlooked in analyzing the case? Will he find out what that is before this ruthless murderer kills someone he loves?

Excerpt:

Chapt 5, scene 1
Long Island, New York
Late December, 1946

Katrina wanted to throw Detective Daltry into a snow bank. The nerve of him, barging into their house twice in two days, demanding she bundle the baby up and take him into the cold. How could that man not recall their harrowing, nighttime drive through the storm of the decade? She tossed her hair back over her shoulder, and with great difficulty held her tongue.
Momma apparently had no such reservations. "Detective, what you are doing is very wrong."
Katrina came up beside her mother, to show a united front. "This is outrageous." Her eyes narrowed and she crossed her arms over her chest. She hated the tone of her voice, but this baby wasn't a ping-pong ball to be batted back and forth as the detective moved forward with his murder case.
He ignored her and continued addressing her mother.
"I'm sorry, ma'am." He removed his fedora. "Chief Ferguson has already made the necessary phone calls and arrangements have been made. I must take Leslie Janos Bauer with me to the home of his aunt in Bay Shore. The chief would prefer your daughter come along in an official capacity as a nurse. It's up to her, but I have to take the baby."
Momma's face flushed beet-red, a sure sign she'd become enraged. "This is not good for him… this hustle from place to place."
"With all due respect, ma'am, a child belongs with his family, if at all possible." The detective took a step toward Katrina. "Now, will you please fetch the baby." It wasn't a request.
Katrina made sure she stood tall. "Yes, I'll get Leslie." She clenched her fists at her side and jutted her chin. "This is disgraceful. You are using this infant to solve your murder case. Perhaps your own tragic life experience clouds your judgment?"
His mouth fell open and he took a step back.
"If you have it within your heart, give me one minute. I'll get him ready and get my coat and boots on." Without giving him a chance to reply, Katrina turned and stormed up the stairs.
Leslie lay sleeping in the baby-doll cradle Poppa had made for her when she was a little girl. Poppa had that kind of talent. He could make anything. In her heart she knew, he'd figured it would be her baby's bassinet. At least now, it had a real purpose. She ran a finger over the hand carved leaves in the headboard.
"Milachku, time to wake up." She took the infant into her arms inhaling the smell of baby, sweeter than the most expensive imported perfume.
Leslie yawned and she snuggled her nose in the soft folds of skin between his head and shoulder, kissing his neck. He cooed, so safe in her arms.
She brought him to her heart, holding him, rocking him and spoke softly to her reflection in the mirror above her bureau. "Fat chance I'll ever walk down the aisle or have a family of my own with the man shortage since the war." Something deep in the core of her female-self rebelled, a throbbing turbulence, from which deep hunger erupted.
She stroked Leslie's cheek and made a funny face. The softness of his skin melted her heart.
He smiled at her and kicked.
"I'm so sorry. I promised I'd protect you and I can't." She forced a smile and made clucking noises.
He grabbed her hair and yanked.
"Ouch." She laughed, removing strands of her hair from his little fist.
A tear escaped and ran down the side of her cheek. "I can do this." She lifted her chin, sucked in a long breath, wrapped Leslie in a heavy quilt, and picked up his tote bag.

"Nike, you are such an example of what one person can do by living full-throttle heart and soul. Goodbye Noel looks great." ~~ Sibella Giorello, Acclaimed author of the Raleigh Harmon (FBI) series

Why did Nike write this novel?

I'd wanted to write a Christmas story for the longest time. I'm a murder mystery fan and as many crime fiction readers do, I love a good Christmas whodunit. I also wanted to write a love story, more than a romance. So, I thought I'd pair Ian Daltry, a detective who had a moral purpose to seek justice for the murder victim with Katrina Lenart, a pediatric nurse who is not only beautiful, but smart, compassionate and independent. Of course there were a few fireworks because Katrina can be obstinate. But more than that, I wanted to show their growing relationship as a deep one, where honesty, trust and a shared faith were so important.

Tell us something topical, interesting, funny, or something we would not expect about the writing or research of this novel.

Well, I wanted go have my main characters be believable, warts and all, yet also sympathetic. So, I'd say the hardest and yet most interesting part for me as a writer was showing their less than perfect side and yet somehow getting the reader to cheer them on. There were times when they might come across as obstinate, willful, or tenacious. In these instances I wanted to present Ian and Katrina in ways so that the reader will understand their inner turmoil and root for them. I wanted to show how two ordinary people could rise up, face evil, and do the right thing. A difficult challenge.

A CHRISTMAS BONUS by Patty Froese

CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE

When Millie's boss asks her to work over Christmas, she's hesitant to give him any more overtime. She has plans for her life that include quitting this job and starting her own photography business, and she promises herself to quit by New Years.

Andrew Holmes has no desire to go back to his tiny hometown for the holidays, but his manipulative grandfather gives him an ultimatum that he just can't refuse. So in order to get the last project of the year finished in time, he asks his assistant, Millie, to make the trip with him.

With a disgruntled brother, a sister-in-law struggling with infertility and a little boy who shows up claiming that one of the Holmes men is his father, Christmas is about to get complicated...

EXCERPT:

"So, Millie says she'd like to stay," Andrew announced.

"Good." Louise shot her a smile. "Do you like fruitcake, Millie?"

"I think so." Mille sank into a seat next to her boss.

"Me, too..." Louise disappeared into the fridge, her voice meandering out from the chilly depths.

Except I always hate the fruit in it. So I just make the cake. But the cake is rather dry."

"It's more like a Christmas cracker," Andrew murmured, and Millie repressed a laugh.

The dense, dry confection that landed with a heavy thud on the tabletop looked nothing like the fruitcake she'd seen in the past.

"Guests first." Louise announced cheerfully, and when Millie shot Andrew a "help me" look, he pointed under the table.

"Give it to the dog," he mouthed.

The dog? So far, Millie hadn't seen a dog in the house, and when she slowly raised the plastic tablecloth to peer under the table, she was met with the biggest canine face she'd ever seen in her life. Stifling a yelp of shock, she turned her ashen face towards Andrew.

"That's Edgar," Andrew said.

"Edgar?"

He nodded. "Get used to him." When she turned her attention to the plate deposited in front of her, Andrew leaned in and murmured in her ear. "Thanks for coming, by the way."

Patty, why did you write this novel?

I started writing this novel at Christmas last year, after my publisher said that they were looking for Christmas stories for the upcoming year. It was particularly fun to write a Christmas story during the holiday season, but I wanted to make sure that I showed a family--the real kind--with quirks, kinks and dysfunction all over the place.  I also wanted to show how Christmas and faith can make all the difference in the middle of a mess.

Tell us something topical, interesting, funny, or something we would not expect about the writing or research of this novel.

This is a romance that follows two couples--a CEO and the assistant that he can't live without, and a married couple who struggle with infertility. I hadn't meant for the married couple to get so much space into the book, but once I started working on it, they took on flesh and bone and really intrigued me. I enjoy pairing a more idealized couple with a more down to earth couple in my novels. While the hero and heroine let us fall in love all over again, the other couple serves to balance out the sweetness--some sea salt on the dark chocolate.

EXCERPT:

From chapter eight: Imagine God Changing Your Future

IMAGINE OUTDATED TEXTBOOKS
One psychology professor openly ridiculed Christians in one of my university classes with more than seventy students. As the instructor made sarcastic remarks about Christians in the news and preached his atheistic ideas, I wondered why no one challenged him. One day I raised my hand.
“You said this textbook will be outdated in ten years,” I began. “So what you are saying today might not be true in ten years?”
The questions flowed.
“Can you prove evolution? Isn’t it true you accept it by faith? Are you aware that many scientists have thrown out missing links because they couldn’t find them? Did you know scientists are even putting forth the idea that man might have fallen from outer space?
“How did creation turn out so perfectly without a Designer? Why aren’t monkeys turning into humans now?”
He admitted that, yes, the textbooks and the theories and knowledge in them would soon be outdated; that he didn’t have all the answers; and, “Yes, we do accept some things by faith. But when something is universally accepted, we treat it as fact.”
I should have asked, “Then because the God of creation and the Resurrection of Jesus Christ are universally accepted, that should be treated as fact?”
A few weeks later, I asked a science teacher if the first and second laws of thermodynamics violated evolution. The teacher had opened the class on the environment by stating everything would be based on evolution.
No more than thirty-five pages into the text, Living in the Environment, by G. Tyler Miller Jr., the class was studying the law of energy degradation, also known as the second law of thermodynamics. The law states that matter, if left to itself and undergoing physical or chemical changes, will always change in the direction of decreased order and decreased energy content. The entire universe obeys this law, and this includes every chemical reaction.
In words plain and simple, the law means anything left to itself will slowly fall apart. Every time you see an old barn with the roof sagging and the walls falling in, you see demonstration of this law. Despite galaxies thought to be expanding (are they expanding, or are we increasing our knowledge?), scientists will tell you the entire universe is slowing down, growing old, and, as the saying goes, is running out of steam.
The second energy law also tells us energy tends to flow or change spontaneously from a compact and ordered form to a dispersed and random, or disordered, form.
“No one has ever found a violation of this law,” Miller states.
When the teacher read that, I put up my hand. “Isn’t evolution a violation of this law?”
In order for evolution to occur, many complex chemical changes must take place, and they must all be in the direction of increased order and energy to move from the simple to the complex.
The teacher paused a moment, cleared his throat, and said, “Well, evolution is the only violation.”
The theory of evolution also violates the first law of thermodynamics, which simply says energy (or matter) neither can be created nor destroyed.
A story goes that God and Satan were having a discussion.
“I can do anything you can,” Satan said, stretching his puny body so he looked taller.
God smiled. “OK. Make a man.”
Satan bent over and began scraping up dirt.
God grabbed his shoulder. “Use your own dirt.”

Ada, Why did you write IMAGINE THE FUTURE YOU?

I wrote this book because I love young people, and Satan convinced opinion leaders in the world to try to eliminate Christianity everywhere and keep the young from believing the Bible. The Ten Commandments are outlawed, and immorality expected and almost mandated. Teens and young adults already are challenged by their broken homes, wicked-living role models in Hollywood, and often churches don’t teach and preach the whole gospel such as “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life” (Romans 6:23), while schools indoctrinate them with atheistic teaching. Too many youth believe the church is irrelevant. But truth is, Jesus is the only way they can achieve abundant life here and for eternity.

TELL US SOMETHING TOPICAL, INTERESTING, FUNNY, OR SOMETHING WE WOULD NOT EXPECT ABOUT YOUR THANKSGIVING TRADITIONS.

I am the youngest of eight children and we always used to get together for holidays. Since many were from out of town, we met for breakfast, too. Well my brother-in-laws, who complained about their eggs at home, put their heads together and decided to have a contest to see which Nicholson girl could do the most damage to an egg. My insulted sisters (I had four) took on the challenge. Wonderful eggs began appearing on the tables, so the brothers-in-law upped the contest to biscuits. I was one of those from out of town, and as I watched my sister, Marjorie, pour Bisquick into a bowl, she threatened, “Don’t you dare tell anyone I use this!” It was all in fun and no Nicholson gal became Best Egg Destroyer. Our real times of thanksgiving came during prayer time during reunions. Often we wept with one another as we testified and thanked God for our blessings. Then we brought our needs before Him. Our family, since my oldest sis became a Christian the year I was born, has been blessed.
My roots in a family of achievers who served God contributed to the woman and writer I am today.
